How to Connect the Polygon Network to Your MetaMask Wallet

MetaMask has always been the preferred wallet for accessing the Ethereum network. In this step-by-step guide, we will explain how to connect and configure Polygon Network on Metamask to access decentralized applications and DeFi platforms at a fraction of the cost of Ethereum.

Users are increasingly frustrated with the steep price hike when interacting with the Ethereum network and are now looking for ways to reduce their costs. Polygon Network (also known as MATIC) is a Tier 2 scaling solution that enhances the functionality of the Ethereum blockchain, increasing network scalability and overall transaction speed.

Which begets the question, how do I add a polygon to my MetaMask wallet?

What is a MetaMask Wallet?

MetaMask is a crypto wallet and gateway for blockchain-based applications. The wallet is available as a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Brave or a mobile app for Android or iOS. By default, Metamask is connected to the Ethereum network but can also be configured to connect to Binance Smart Chain, Avalanche, or Polygon.

What is a polygon network?

Polygon is a protocol for creating and connecting Ethereum-enabled blockchain networks. The goal is to address issues compounded in other blockchains, such as high gas velocities and low velocities, without sacrificing security. The system is similar to Polkadot, Cosmos, or Avalanche but is lighter and more secure. Moreover, you can take full advantage of the network effects of Ethereum.

Polygon’s cheaper transaction costs and faster block times have fueled the increased adoption of several popular Daps, such as Aave, 0x, or Sushiswap.

Polygon MATIC Tokens

MATIC is an Ethereum-based ERC-20 token used to power the Polygon network. The polygon token (MATIC) can be used to pay transaction fees on Dapp running on Polygon or for stakes to secure the network.

Polygon MATIC tokens can be purchased or traded on popular centralized exchanges such as Binance, FTX, or or decentralized exchanges such as UniSwap or SushiSwap.

How does the Polygon network connect to MetaMask?

Below are the details you will need to add to connect to the Polygon MetaMask network. However, before making any significant change to your Metamask wallet, make sure you have access to your private keys, also known as passwords so that you can back up and restore your wallet in case something goes wrong.

Steps Involved

Step 1: Download MetaMask

To start connecting Metamask to Avalanche, make sure MetaMask is installed on your device. Installing MetaMask will not be covered in this topic, but you can check out our tutorial to see how to configure MetaMask on your selected device.

Step 2: Add network to MetaMask

Polygon Network

Once MetaMask is installed, open your MetaMask wallet. After opening your wallet, click on the drop-down menu next to the name of the connected network (usually defined as Ethereum Mainnet). Then select “Add network.”

Step 3: Add Polygon Network to MetaMask

You will be directed to the “Add Network” page. To continue, type (or copy and paste) the following information into the field provided. You can see the picture below for reference.

  • Network Name: Central Polygon Network
  • New RPC URL:
  • Channel ID: 137
  • Symbol: MATIC
  • Block Explorer URL:

Step 4: Save

Once logged in, click Register, and your MetaMask wallet will connect to the Polygon network. Congratulations!

Once you have connected Polygon to your Metamask wallet, you can use it with apps like Aave, 0x, or SushiSwap. However, you will need some MATIC tokens to pay the transaction fee. You can also check the Polygon developer website for more information

How to send MATIC tokens to MetaMask Wallet?

To use the Polygon network, you will need some MATIC tokens to pay your gas taxes. This is the same way you need ETH for Ethereum and BNB for Binance Smart Chain; if you already have MATIC tokens in an Ethereum-based wallet (such as Metamask) that you purchased from Binance Exchange or Uniswap, you will need to connect them from Prima Ethereum to Polygon Network.

To connect your MATIC tokens

1: Go to Matic Wallet V2 and log in

Go to Matic Wallet V2, where you will be asked to connect a wallet. “Connect your Metamask wallet, sign the transaction,” and make sure Metamask is connected to the main Ethereum network. Here are your MATIC tokens for the bridge.

Polygon Network

2: Select Polygon Bridge and choose MATIC

At the top of your screen, click “Applications” and choose “Polygon Bridge.” Here you can change your ERC20 tokens in the Polygon network.

Then choose “MATIC” from the drop-down list and enter the “Amount” you wish to participate.

Step 5: Transfer

Click “Transfer.” Where you will get a message that transferring funds from Ethereum to Polygon takes about 7-8 minutes.

Step 6: Go ahead and approve.

Click “Continue”. It will show an overview of the transfer, which includes all the estimated fees. “Continue,” “Confirm,” then “Approve transaction” in the MetaMask wallet.

Once the bridge has completed its transfer, your MATIC tokens will appear in the polygon wallet below the token list and the token balance. Moreover, they will also be in the MetaMask wallet of the Polygon network.

Now that MATIC is available in your Metamask wallet, you can use Dapps with the polygon network for cheaper and faster transactions.
